Only God knows who is saved or not. But is it possible to lose salvation through ingratitude?
Fruits of the spirit – we read about joy (Galatians 5). How does being a Christian lead us to develop this Fruit of the Spirit “Joy”
Mathew 13: 44-46 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”
Knowledge of the Kingdom helps bring Joy and Hope in Jesus, which is what this parable is saying.
Sometimes we don’t want to seem presumptuous and we often feel unworthy which can take away joy.
Acts 15: 5-11 – No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”
Eph 2: 4-5 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
2 Tim 1: 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,
GOD WANTS TO SAVE US
Don’t think salvation can be lost by accident or by an unforgiveable sin. It’s possible to miss the point of Christianity.
The possible ways we think we can lose salvation are:
1) Through sins
2) Unforgiveable sin
3) Missing the point
1) Can we lose salvation through Sins?
No, the bible tells us that sins are forgiven and it is through Gods grace we are saved:
Rom 11: 5-6 – So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. 6 And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.
Heb 10:12 – But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,
Col 2:13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[a] alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
We should still repent and try and ask for forgiveness
Compared to Jesus we are all failures.
1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
Key is to recognise we need forgiveness and gratitude.
2) Can we lose Salvation through the Unforgiveable Sin?
What’s the unforgiveable sin?
Mark 3: 28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.
To blaspheme against the holy spirit is to deny God and his power – e.g. atheists. God will not forgive those who do not seek it, or who do not want it!
3) Missing the point – it’s easy to miss the point of Christianity. We need to recognise that we are failures and give gratitude to God for the gift he has given us.
1 Joh 5:11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Heb 10:26 – If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,
Deliberate sins tramples the gift of Jesus. We fail if we choose not to change. Faith must show in better behaviour, conduct, love of Jesus which shows in our lives.
Therefore it’s possible to lose salvation through lack of gratitude.
But breaking of bread and fellowship regularly and study helps keep us on track.
